Lobito Atlantic Railway: At the Heart of One of Africa’s Most Ambitious Infrastructure Initiatives

Lobito Atlantic Railway is a transformative transport and logistics company at the heart of one of Africa’s most ambitious infrastructure initiatives. It manages and operates the historic Benguela Railway Corridor, a strategic east‑west rail link extending from the deep‑water Port of Lobito on Angola’s Atlantic coast across the country to Luau on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and further into the inland mining regions. This corridor plays a central role in connecting central African production zones with global export markets via a modern and integrated transport network.

Established under a 30‑year concession awarded by the Government of Angola in 2022, Lobito Atlantic Railway is operated by a consortium of experienced international partners that include mineral commodities trader Trafigura, Portuguese infrastructure group Mota‑Engil and Belgian rail operator Vecturis. The concession covers rehabilitation, modernisation, maintenance and commercial operation of the rail line, as well as the mineral terminal at Lobito port.

The company’s core mission is to provide secure, efficient and reliable rail freight services that link the Atlantic coast to the mineral‑rich regions of the DRC and, through agreements with neighbouring rail systems, into the heart of the Copperbelt. Through this network, Lobito Atlantic Railway enables mining companies, logistics providers and regional traders to export minerals such as copper and cobalt to global markets more quickly and cost‑effectively than alternative routes.

A defining feature of Lobito Atlantic Railway’s operation is its integrated intermodal transport model. The rail line is directly connected to the Port of Lobito’s mineral terminal — a deep‑water facility that handles large volumes of bulk and containerised cargo. This direct linkage allows cargo to move seamlessly between rail and maritime transport without unnecessary handling or delays, creating an efficient export gateway for Central African commodities.

The company’s intermodal approach goes beyond rail‑to‑sea connectivity. It supports road transport linkages that feed into and complement the rail corridor, ensuring that goods arriving from inland production centres can be consolidated and transported to the port by rail, or in other cases moved by road to last‑mile destinations or distribution hubs along the axis. By coordinating rail, port and road movement, Lobito Atlantic Railway enhances logistics efficiency and reduces total transit times compared with traditional road‑dependent routes.

Investment in modern rolling stock, including container wagons and locomotives, expands capacity and improves service reliability, enabling the corridor to handle a diversified cargo mix that includes not only minerals but also agricultural produce, industrial inputs and general freight. Expansion of logistics infrastructure adjacent to the line is underway, reflecting the company’s commitment to building a fully integrated transport environment where cargo flows are streamlined across modes.

Lobito Atlantic Railway’s vision aligns with broader regional trade and development strategies that aim to strengthen connectivity between inland African economies and coastal ports. By integrating rail, port and road infrastructure into a coherent intermodal framework, the company is unlocking new economic opportunities, supporting supply chain resilience and positioning the Lobito corridor as a competitive alternative gateway for exports from Southern and Central Africa.

Overall Lobito Atlantic Railway represents a new era of transport integration in Africa — one that bridges rail and maritime systems with road networks to create interconnected supply chains capable of serving regional commerce and linking African producers to the world.
