Gabcon Botswana, formally known as Gaborone Container Terminal (GABCON), is the country’s premier dry port and inland container terminal, serving as a logistics gateway linking Botswana with regional seaports and global trade networks. Founded in 1995 and operating in Gaborone with facilities also in Palapye, Gabcon has grown into the largest container terminal in Botswana and a central hub for multimodal freight movement.
Gabcon began as a department of Botswana Railways and later became a joint venture between Botswana Railways and Transnet Freight Rail of South Africa, with Botswana Railways holding a majority share. The company was incorporated as a private limited entity in 2006 and re registered in 2019, reflecting its evolution into a commercially focused logistics operator.
From an intermodal logistics perspective, Gabcon plays a pivotal role in facilitating containerised cargo movement into and out of Botswana via rail, road, and bonded storage facilities. The terminal leverages rail connections with South African ports such as Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, and East London, enabling importers and exporters to move goods cost effectively from ocean ports directly to inland Botswana and vice versa. This rail linkage supports through bills of lading, reducing handling costs and transit time compared with road only transport.
Gabcon offers a range of logistics services that include container handling and storage, yard operations, cartage, rental of containers, weighbridge services, and bonded facilities that allow containers to be manifested directly to Gabcon without clearing at seaports. Its container handling fleet includes advanced lifting equipment capable of managing different container sizes, and the terminal has capacity to store substantial volumes of TEUs, making it a key inland logistics node.
The dry port’s strategic location in Gaborone places it at the heart of Botswana’s rail and road transport network. The facility supports cargo flows from major seaports and serves as a consolidation point for inland distribution, enhancing supply chain efficiency for importers, exporters, and freight forwarders. By centralising customs clearance, container stuffing and destuffing, and warehousing, Gabcon streamlines freight processes and reduces logistical friction for businesses operating within Botswana and the wider Southern African Development Community region.
Gabcon’s operations are continually being developed to meet increasing cargo volumes and to expand its services, including the addition of value added logistics functions such as intermodal consolidation, cargo warehousing, and potential future services such as car terminals or logistics villages. Its vision is to become a leading integrated logistics provider and container hub for Botswana and the wider region, supporting economic activity and trade competitiveness.
Overall, Gabcon Botswana plays a central role in strengthening Botswana’s logistics infrastructure by linking inland markets with international seaports and regional corridors, improving connectivity, reducing transport costs, and enhancing operational efficiency for the country’s supply chains.
