Denzil, CEO DB Schenker on Leadership and the Future of Logistics in South Africa

Denzil has been part of DB Schenker South Africa for over 30 years and now serves as the company’s CEO. In a recent conversation, he shared insights into his career journey, his perspective on leadership, and his thoughts on the evolving logistics landscape in South Africa.

Tell us about how your career at DB Schenker started.
I joined in September 1984 as a Customs Pay-In clerk. Back then, the role was very hands-on. I had to drive twice a day to submit all payments and customs documents to SARS, and everything was manual—carbon paper, physical copies, the whole process. It was a different world, but it gave me a solid foundation in logistics operations.

From that starting point to CEO, what was your journey like?
In 1992, I became the Volkswagen Delegate in operations, and two years later I stepped into my first managerial role. I moved with my family to Port Elizabeth to open the DB Schenker branch there, where I spent seven fulfilling years. In 1999, I returned to Johannesburg for a Contract Logistics and Automotive project role. Soon after, I moved into the General Manager position for Air and Ocean. By 2004, I was Chief Operations Officer, and in 2011 I became CEO. Ten years on, I’m still learning every day and loving the challenge.

What personality traits make a good leader?
Humility and empathy are essential. You need to be realistic about your objectives while staying dedicated and committed to your cause. Leadership is as much about listening and understanding people as it is about strategy.

How would you describe DB Schenker in one word?
Resilient.

And what’s the most important trait that will ensure DB Schenker’s success moving forward?
It’s in our values: Working Together. Collaboration across teams, partners, and clients is what will keep us ahead.

What do you see as the biggest challenges in the logistics industry over the next five years?
The industry isn’t the fastest innovating, so keeping up with our customers’ pace of change will be a constant challenge. We need to anticipate their needs and stay ahead of expectations, or risk falling behind.

Which sectors do you see driving growth in the next decade?
Renewable and alternative energy, particularly solar, is already growing quickly. While it’s starting from a lower base in South Africa, the potential is enormous, and logistics will play a critical role in enabling that growth.

How do you see the logistics industry evolving over the next ten years?
We will see more mergers and acquisitions, accelerating market consolidation. Data, technology, and automation will continue to transform operations at every level. Companies that think creatively and experiment with new ways of doing things will be the ones that thrive.

What is the key to DB Schenker’s success in South Africa?
It’s a combination of a strong brand and a reliable, committed team. The brand carries weight, but it’s the people who bring it to life. Both elements must work in harmony.

What role will robotics play in South African logistics?
Robotics will have a significant impact. Routine tasks such as manual picking or data entry will become automated. This shift will require us to evolve our workforce, focusing on higher-value skills and strategic roles.

Do you see driverless vehicles arriving soon?
Not immediately. The infrastructure in South Africa isn’t yet ready, so widespread adoption will take time.

Do you have a guiding quote for the DB Schenker team?
Sometimes the best “you” have is not enough. The best results come from working together.

What’s the most challenging part of your role?
Aligning people with different agendas and ensuring everyone is focused on the business objectives can be difficult.

And the part you enjoy the most?
Facing new challenges every day. The variety keeps the role exciting and rewarding.

Outside of work, what keeps you active and inspired?
I’m very sporty. I play soccer, volleyball, and regularly go to the gym. I’m also a family man, so spending quality time with my family is incredibly important to me.
