Africa Global Logistics (AGL) has established a significant and growing presence in Benin, underpinning the country’s role as a regional logistics gateway. AGL operates in Benin through multiple local entities, notably Benin Terminal, its container terminal operator at the Port of Cotonou, and AGL Benin, its multimodal logistics service provider. Together, they form a critical part of AGL’s broader African network, delivering integrated logistics, port, maritime, and freight solutions for both regional and international customers.
AGL’s operations in Benin are anchored at the Port of Cotonou, one of West Africa’s busiest seaports and a primary gateway for trade with landlocked neighbours such as Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria. Benin Terminal, a subsidiary of AGL, controls an estimated 97 % share of container handling at the port, making it the dominant force in the country’s maritime logistics sector.
In recent years, AGL Benin has undertaken substantial investments to modernize and expand port capacities. This includes a major financing agreement of around 50 billion CFA francs (about €75 million) secured in collaboration with a consortium of local banks, aimed at extending quay length, adding new equipment, and preparing approximately 15 hectares of new container yard space. When completed, the expansion is expected to double the terminal’s throughput capacity to around one million TEUs, significantly enhancing the port’s ability to handle growing cargo volumes and reinforcing Cotonou’s status as a modern logistics hub.
AGL’s commitment to operational excellence at the Port of Cotonou has also been demonstrated through targeted equipment upgrades. The terminal has added a range of new handling machinery, including the acquisition of five high-capacity port tractors, a 16-ton forklift, and state-of-the-art quay gantry cranes. These investments not only improve cargo handling efficiency and turnaround times but also reflect a focus on operator comfort, safety, and environmental performance under its Green Terminal initiative.
The company’s footprint in Benin extends beyond physical infrastructure. AGL actively employs local professionals — with hundreds of direct jobs and additional indirect employment supported through subcontracting and ancillary services — and participates in community and environmental projects, such as mangrove restoration efforts, underscoring its role as a socially engaged business partner.
AGL Benin provides end-to-end logistics services that go beyond port operations, including customs clearance, freight transit, inland transport, and tailored supply chain solutions. AGL’s global network — spanning over 50 countries with more than 23 000 employees — enables customers in Benin to access international freight and logistics capabilities while benefiting from local expertise and infrastructure.
The ongoing modernization of port facilities and expansion of logistics capacities under AGL’s leadership are catalysing trade flows through Benin and strengthening its competitive position in West African supply chains. Increased cargo throughput, upgraded equipment, and streamlined multimodal services have enhanced service quality, improved reliability, and reduced operational bottlenecks for importers and exporters alike.
As regional trade continues to grow, AGL’s sustained investments and operational improvements in Benin are expected to support broader economic development, contribute to job creation, and enhance the country’s integration into continental and global logistics networks.
