Global Intermodal Council Institute® (GICI®)

The Global Intermodal Council Institute® (GICI®) is the professional, standards-setting, and certification arm of the Global Intermodal Council (GIC). It exists to recognize, elevate, and connect individual professionals who demonstrate competence, experience, and leadership across the global intermodal logistics and supply chain ecosystem.

While the Global Intermodal Council operates as a corporate, senior-level platform for institutional collaboration and business engagement, the Institute provides a parallel and complementary pathway focused on individual professional recognition and capability development. Together, they form a unified framework that strengthens both institutions and the leaders who drive them.

The Institute was established to address a critical gap in the global logistics industry: the absence of a globally recognized, cross-modal professional body that reflects real-world experience, leadership responsibility, and industry contribution rather than examination-based credentialing alone.

Purpose and Role of the Institute

The Global Intermodal Council Institute® serves as the custodian of professional standards, leadership recognition, and ethical practice within the intermodal logistics sector. Its role is to formally recognize individuals who have built credible careers in shipping, freight forwarding, logistics, ports, transport, supply chain management, infrastructure, finance, and enabling services.

GICI® certifications are conferred based on an assessment of education, professional experience, scope of responsibility, and demonstrated contribution to the industry. The Institute does not operate as an academic examination body. Instead, it recognizes accumulated professional competence and leadership standing aligned with international best practice and industry relevance.

Individual, Certification-Based Membership

Membership of the Global Intermodal Council Institute® is individual and personal rather than corporate. Individuals become members only after successful certification and admission by the Institute.

Certified members are admitted under the following designations: Member, Global Intermodal Council Institute® (MGICI®) and Fellow, Global Intermodal Council Institute® (FGICI®). These designations are globally portable and remain with the individual across organizations, regions, and career stages. They signal professional credibility, leadership maturity, and peer recognition within the global intermodal community.

Relationship to the Global Intermodal Council

The Institute operates independently in its certification and professional recognition mandate while remaining structurally aligned with the broader mission of the Global Intermodal Council.

Many senior executives engage with both platforms, representing their organizations through corporate membership in GIC while holding personal professional designations through the Institute. This dual engagement strengthens institutional credibility, leadership capability, and industry cohesion.

A Global Professional Community

Through the Institute, certified members become part of a global community of senior professionals committed to excellence, ethical practice, and long-term industry development. Members gain access to professional recognition, thought leadership platforms, experiential learning opportunities, and participation in shaping future standards for intermodal logistics. The Global Intermodal Council Institute® exists to ensure that as the intermodal logistics industry evolves, its leadership standards, professional recognition, and human capability evolve with it.
