Membership

Membership of the Global Intermodal Council (GIC) is designed to serve both organizations and individual professionals, recognizing that strong and resilient logistics ecosystems are built by capable institutions led by credible, experienced leaders.

To support this objective, GIC operates through a clearly defined dual-membership structure that provides distinct pathways for corporate participation and individual professional recognition, while ensuring alignment between institutional influence and leadership capability.

Corporate Membership: Global Intermodal Council

The Global Intermodal Council functions primarily as a corporate, senior-level council. Corporate membership is open to organizations operating within, or enabling, the global intermodal logistics and trade value chain, including freight forwarding companies, shipping lines, ports and terminals, inland container depots, container freight stations, warehousing and distribution operators, road and rail transport companies, third-party logistics providers, infrastructure operators, financial institutions, insurers, technology providers, and equipment manufacturers.

Membership of the Global Intermodal Council is held by the organization rather than by individuals. Each corporate member appoints senior executives to represent the organization within the Council, ensuring that engagement remains decision-oriented, strategic, and institutionally grounded. This structure enables meaningful collaboration, commercial engagement, and long-term relationships across regions and transport modes. Corporate membership is curated and approval-based to preserve the relevance, credibility, and strategic value of the Council.

Individual Membership: Global Intermodal Council InstituteĀ®

In parallel with corporate membership, individual professionals may become members through the Global Intermodal Council InstituteĀ® (GICIĀ®). The Institute serves as the professional and standards-setting arm of the Global Intermodal Council and provides a structured pathway for individual recognition based on competence, experience, and leadership rather than corporate affiliation.

Individual membership in the Institute is granted following a review of academic or professional qualifications, relevant work experience, and demonstrated contribution to the intermodal logistics and supply chain sector. Successful applicants are admitted as Member, Global Intermodal Council InstituteĀ® (MGICIĀ®) or Fellow, Global Intermodal Council InstituteĀ® (FGICIĀ®). Institute membership is personal and portable, remaining with the individual across organizations and geographies, and reflects professional standing within the global intermodal logistics ecosystem.

How Corporate and Institute Membership Work Together

Corporate membership in the Global Intermodal Council and individual membership in the Global Intermodal Council Institute are distinct but complementary. Corporate membership focuses on institutional collaboration, business development, investment, and policy influence, while Institute membership focuses on professional recognition, leadership standards, and long-term capability building.

Many senior leaders engage with GIC through both pathways, representing their organizations within the Council while holding personal professional designations through the Institute.

A Unified Global Platform

This integrated structure allows the Global Intermodal Council to influence the industry at both the institutional level, through companies, partnerships, investments, and trade corridors, and at the professional level, through leadership development, standards, and expertise. Together, the Global Intermodal Council and the Global Intermodal Council Institute form a unified global platform for advancing intermodal logistics, trade, and infrastructure development.
